Squeak Release Meeting 3

Monday, March 17 at 18:00 UTC

Text via Freenode channel #squeak; voice via Skype

Agenda items and notes

Agenda items are in normal face; answers from the meeting are in italic

  1. Squeak 4 questions:
    1. The primary goal is to get a minimal, strictly MIT-licensed image
    2. Is KernelImage the place to start?
      1. Yes. Pavel, Edgar, and Matthew agree on this point. Spoon would be more ideal, but will not be ready soon, and the license issue is VERY URGENT as it is preventing us from joining the Conservency
    3. Is spoon already license-clean?
      1. It doesn't matter. We're doing Kernel Image. We can audit spoon when we incorperate it, possibly as Squeak 5
    4. What are the features of each?
  2. Which process shall we take to get to a cleanly-licensed Squeak 4?
    1. Take KernelImage, write tests, and rewrite methods according to the license audit Pavel already did?
      1. Probably something like this. The process details would need to be discussed in a meeting with all release team members present. Edgar was not here
    2. Take Spoon, and do a license audit to see if it is clean?
      1. Spoon is not ready yet
    3. Something else?
  3. Unresolved from last meeting:
    1. Issues regarding licensing
      1. Pavel is working on publishing the tools he used to audit Kernel Image
      2. Is there a complete history of all squeak methods somewhere?
        1. Andrew is doing something about that. What is the status?
          1. Not discussed
        2. Andreas collected all squeak history as of Squeak 3.6. Not sure whether there is anything new there or not, but it is nicely packaged for easy download
        3. I found something called image_with_all_changes. It seems like 3.9 without the compressed sources. Is it useful?
      3. Is blind rewriting sufficient to change the license of a method regardless of all prior versions?
        1. Craig says "It is sufficient but not necessary". Let's discuss this for 10 mins, agree on a specific plan, then start this process.
      4. Are method names, class names and overall design subject to license?
        1. No
      5. sig asked: Is there a way (legal of course) to proclaim that given work will become freely available to anyone after some time passed?
        1. This question is not clear, and Craig didn't know the answer
    2. What to do to finish 3.10
      1. Is Edgar's FunSqueak meant to be FullSqueak?
        1. Edgar was not here
      2. Are all the updates for 3.10 final in the update stream?
        1. Since the previous meeting, Ralph sent an email saying yes
    3. What is KernelImage, and why is it different?
      1. All the information about Kernel Image is on the wiki at http://www.squeaksource.com/KernelImage.html
    4. Is sharing with Croquet and Etoys a goal of the next release team?
      1. Probably not. The goal for 4.0 is strictly license-cleanliness. Perhaps this is a job for 4.1 or a separate team

Please add agenda items; the wiki password is 'squeak'

Transcript

This meeting was much longer and less organized than the previous two. Six hours from start to finish, with 3.5 hours of actual discussion. It is recorded at ircbrowse.com
